12 Louw Street, in the heart of Stellenbosch, used to be
an old derelict house, with an overgrown garden and very
little going for it...
That
was until Matilda de Bod noticed the potential of this
old house in April of 2003 and decided to renovate it
into the beautiful building standing at the same address
today.
Batavia Boutique Hotel is the brainchild of Fire and
Glory Investments (PTY) LTD - a company established by
Matilda de Bod, Windred van Reenen and Joan Sonn.
Perhaps "Fire and Glory" is a fitting description for
what happened in the 8 months of starting and completing
this purpose built Boutique Hotel.
The name "Batavia Boutique Hotel" was derived from
Batavia, a Dutch Colony in South East Asia. Many of the
senior officials at the Cape (established on 6 April
1652), including Jan van Riebeeck, had previously served
in the east. The
Governor,
Simon van der Stel, who established the small town of
Stellenbosch in 1672, grew up in Batavia.
Batavia, as well as the Cape of Good Hope, was a place
of rendezvous, a meeting place for ships and travellers,
a place to gain access to fresh produce and lastly, a
place of restoration.
Experience the Batavia - reminiscent of the comfortable
villas that hosted discerning travellers and lordly
merchants in the bygone days of the Dutch East India
Company. This boutique hotel is conveniently situated
just off Dorp Street, the historic heart of
Stellenbosch.
Besides convenient closeness to village life, the
Batavia offers five en-suite bedrooms, a comfortable
lounge, a dining room where sumptuous breakfasts are
served, a meeting room for business travellers who wish
to consult in comfort, and a swimming pool in a relaxed
garden setting. Original antiques, eastern rugs, ostrich
leather furniture, bright bay windows, local artworks,
patio views and an excellent selection of wines evoke
the richness of the town's Dutch-African heritage.
